Tuoi Tre News describes the Dutch and their respect for the sea

Few months ago Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital and surrounding areas have been hit by torrential rains. The ensuing flooding of large parts of the northern areas has led environmentalists to look abroad for similarities in other countries and solutions. The Vice-Director of Centre for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development, Ms. Ho Thi Yen Thu took this issue on Tuoi Tre newspaper. She also shared her view with Neso Vietnam:
“I am an environmentalist, currently practicing in Vietnam. I have been twice awarded fellowships by NUFFIC to have short training courses in the Netherlands. I have also used to work with a number of Dutch expert colleagues in some Netherlands funded projects in Vietnam. Such experiences have allowed me to learn and to know more about the Netherlands and its people. And I find myself in love with them, so much.
The feelings that I’ve had on the recent flood in Hanoi and other places in Vietnam did trigger me to link it to the similar experiences of the Netherlands.
All the love and admiration came back. And I wrote the article.
I do dream of one day, our Vietnam also becomes determined and strong enough to find ways for “building with nature”, as the Dutch do.

On 31 January 1953, nearly 2,000 people in the Netherlands drowned, 10,000 houses were swept away and 100,000 people had to evacuate. A typhoon and storm almost destroyed three provinces of the Netherlands. Forty five kilometers of dykes that had kept the sea out were ruined and sea water flooded the Netherlands that lies below sea level. This disaster made the Dutch people realize the importance of managing their friend and enemy the sea.
Right after the disaster, the Dutch Government issued a strategy that has resulted in . world-leading water management system that not only keeps the country safe but also has led to new inventions and technologies that are being used all over the world.

Lời thề của người Hà Lan
Thảm kịch từ nước biển đã khiến người Hà Lan nhận ra những yếu kém và họ đã chung sức sửa sai một cách hoàn hảo.
Đêm 31-1-1953 là một đêm kinh hoàng không thể nào quên đối với người Hà Lan. Bão, sóng lớn, gió to và triều cường cùng với mực nước dâng của biển Bắc đã phá tan khoảng 45km đê biển nhấn chìm ba tỉnh phía nam.
