Looking for brilliant technical expert abroad
24 Sep 2010
According to an article in a Dutch newspaper “De Volkskrant”, the Netherlands is in need of technical experts, even in this time of economic crisis. This is why the Netherlands is actively looking for students in other countries to come and study and work this country. For example, the region around Eindhoven will need 500 technical experts on the bachelor level in the next five years. The Netherlands is looking for people from Turkey, Indonesia and other countries. Nuffic – the Dutch organization for international cooperation in higher education has opened 10 offices in various countries such as Brazil, South Korea, Russia, China and Vietnam. “If you don’t do this , you will be left behind and you will become provincial,” explained Han Dommers – Head of Promotion department at Nuffic. The British and the French have already set up an extensive network with more than 100 offices”
Almost 40% of foreign students in the Netherlands are originally from countries outside the EU. Some universities like TU Eindhoven give foreign students who study at their institute job guarantees. By that way they can recruit people who wish to stay and work in the Netherlands after finishing their studies.
Although the selection of foreign talents has already started, there still exist some problems with the financing for their studies and accommodation (tuition fees and living costs). From the 1st January 2009, non-EU students have to finance their own studies. “France, Germany and Great Britain invest much more in the field of education than the Netherlands,” said Han Dommers from Nuffic. “That is why we also attract Dutch companies to support scholarships for foreign students. This will help them keep the graduates working for their companies for some years” . On an annual basis, there will be 250 foreign students having opportunities to study in the Netherlands with a so-called ‘toptalentbeurs’ ( top talent programme), but that, of course, is a selected group. This is the absolute top.
